Port Bin Qasim employees express concerns over selling of Berth No 3, 4 to foreign company

KARACHI: The employees of Port Muhammad Bin Qasim (PMBQ) have expressed deep concerns over the selling of Berth No 3 and Berth No 4 to a foreign company.

According to details, there were total four berths at Port Muhammad Bin Qasim out of those the Berth No 1 is used for containerized oil import and export while the Berth No 2 is used for anchoring small vessels due to its shallow depth at Qasim International Containers Terminal (QICT).

The sources informed Customs Today that the Berth No 3 and Berth No 4 are usied to anchor vessels and shipments containing around 45 tonnes of consignments, adding that three berths have already being given to the QICT for anchoring the imported consignments for the last 19 years.

The sources further said that the selling of Berth No 3 and Berth No 4 to the foreign company would put a devastating impact on around 1,800 employees who are working on the said berths.

“The cargo handling including project and general cargo, import export, and importation of cement consignments would also be affected which on one hand damaging the national exchequer at large extent while, on the other hand would also making the employees unemployed”, sources added.
