WARSAW: According to the Gazeta Wyborcza daily, Customs and Border Guard foiled 108,600 cases of smuggling in 2014, bagging a total of 547 million cigarettes in the process, some 145 million more than the previous year.

The grey market for cigarette smuggling in Poland was valued at PLN 2.7 billion in 2013, with the rolling tobacco market valued at PLN 1.9 billion the same year. Meanwhile, the level of tax in legally-bought cigarettes in Poland now accounts for more than 80 percent of the final price, while a decade ago, that figure was just under 70 percent.
