WARSAW: A new monitoring system for the road transport of goods, part of Poland’s crackdown on tax fraud, comes into effect this week.

The system aims to make it easier for customs officers to control the taxation of items being transported to or through Poland.

“The monitoring system for road transport of goods is a tool in the fight with cheats who illegally trade in liquid fuels, denatured alcohols and dried tobacco, among other things, or who fraudulently claim tax on goods and services,” the finance ministry said.

The new system will require the shipment and receipt of goods to be registered, with entries being filled in by the sender, recipient and carrier.

A spokesman for the finance ministry said the new rules would this year mean an extra PLN330 million (EUR78 million) for the budget because of a clampdown on fraudulent tax claims, and about PLN6.5 billion over the next 10 years.

But it has been criticized by freighters and fuel organizations.
