WARSAW: Polish food prices are likely to increase by up to 5% as a result of the current drought, Farming Minister Marek Sawicki said.
Up to one million hectares of agricultural land in Poland may have so far been affected by drought, Sawicki told PAP Polish news agency on Monday. Damages are currently being estimated by local government committees and the first reports should reach the ministry on August 20, Sawicki said. All details will be known at the turn of August and September.
Quick assessment of damages is needed for the state to be able to start granting aid, mostly in the shape of preferential loans or debt relief, to affected farmers.
