PITTSBURGH: Starting March 27, Port Authority will shut down the Red Line Rail section for approximately six months to make repairs. The project will be replacing embedded tracks and street pavement in the center lanes of Broadway Avenue.
The repairs will occur in two stages, starting on the ends of Broadway Avenue in Beechview and then to the center of the community after initial work is complete. “So I don’t know how long it’s going to take me…but that’s the only alternative to driving downtown and that even worse,” said David Sheldon, a downtown worker.
A rail shuttle will be added to connect to the Blue Line. “I’ll catch the buses, like everyone else. I will make it work,” said Rick Bigelow of Beltzhoover. Channel 11 has learned that extra buses will be running alongside of the rail line.
Since 2008, the section has experienced 22 failures and has reached its capacity of use. The Red Line provides service to approximately 12,000 riders daily between the South Hills, the North Shore and downtown Pittsburgh.
