ST. PETERSBURG: Container handling equipment manufacturer Liebherr Container Cranes has announced that it will deliver four ship-to-shore (STS) container cranes to the Port of Bronka’s Fenix Container Terminal in the Russian city of St. Petersburg.
The cranes, which are due to become operational at the purpose built container terminal in the upcoming weeks, were designed and manufactured in the Irish facility of Liebherr Container Cranes.
The completed cranes were then assembled in the Liebherr Rostock plant in Germany and barged to Russia’s second biggest city through the Baltic Sea.
Port of Bronka’s container terminal is currently going under a three-stage development, with the first stage, from 2013 to 2015, being delivering a capacity of 1.45m teu per year.
In the second stage, which will be implemented by 2017, the annual capacity of the container terminal will increase to 1.9m teu, while in the last stage the increased capacity will reach 3m teu per year by 2022.
Pat O Leary, managing director of Liebherr Container Cranes, said: “We supplied our first cranes to Russia, many years ago and since then have delivered both STS and RTGs to ports all across Russia.
“This particular project required that the cranes be delivered fully assembled and our maritime facility in Rostock was utilized to facilitate this.”
The Port of Bronka is a new port currently being constructed to increase the container throughput capacity in the St. Petersburg region.
When the three stages of development will be completed, Bronka Port is expected to house the largest container terminal in Russia.
