Port of Hong Kong container throughput decreased in 2015

HONG KONG: The container throughput of Port of Hong Kong decreased with 9.5% in 2015, amounting to 20.11 million TEU. The main factors for the bad annual report continue to be the global financial crisis and delay of the Chinese economy. In particular, the transshipment of containers through Kwai Tsing, which is the largest container terminal in Hong Kong, totaled to 15.57 million TEU in 2015, which represent a decrease of 11.5% in comparison with the prior year. The handling of containers for import through the terminal amounted to 8.02 million TEU, representing a decrease of 11.1%, while the handling of containers for export amounted to 7.55 million TEU, representing a decrease of 11,8%. On the other port terminals were handled 4.54 million TEU, which is 2.1% less than 2014.

The negative dynamics of containers handled at Port of Hong Kong was recorded throughout the year. The largest fluctuation on year-on-year base was recorded in October 2015, when the container turnover decreased with 18.8% yoy, while the smallest was recorded in February 2015, when the container turnover decreased with 2.7%.

In December 2015 the container terminals in the Port of Hong Kong handled totally 1.59 million TEU, which represent a decrease of 10.6% yoy. The container throughput of the largest terminal Kwai Tsing amounted to 1.25 million TEU (-10.9%).

Port of Hong Kong, located by the South China Sea, is a deepwater seaport dominated by trade in containerised manufactured products, and to a lesser extent raw materials and passengers. It is one of the busiest ports in the world, in the three categories of shipping movements, cargo handled and passengers carried.
