Power breakdown put PSM at risk of damage

KARACHI: Pakistan Steel Mill (PSM), spokesman Shazim Akhkter on Wednesday said that since gas was not restored on July 6, 2015, the Tuesday Night’s breakdown of electricity in Karachi put Pakistan Steel’s Blast Furnaces, Brick/Lime Kilns and Power Plant Boilers at the risk of damage.

He said that the assessment is underway to calculate the loss and damage incurred due to low gas pressure and recent electricity breakdown.

The spokesman said that due to power breakdown, water which is used as coolant was also stopped thus causing damage to the cooling system of the Blast Furnaces.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan Steel requires huge quantity of water to cool its plants like Blast Furnaces, Coke Oven by Product Plant working at high temperature, whose supply is also disconnected due to power breakdown and caused damage to the cooling system of the plants.
