DAMASCUS: A notorious Syrian drug lord, who specialized in the trade of an amphetamine called Captagon, was arrested by Lebanon’s Internal Security Forces in Jounieh last week, police said Sunday.
After coordinating with Saudi security agencies, the Central Narcotics Agency successfully arrested the head of an “international Captagon smuggling network,” the ISF said in a statement.
The man, identified as M.R. 51, was described by the ISF statement as “one of the most dangerous manufacturers and smugglers of Captagon pills.”
Police seized more than one ton of chemical compounds used to manufacture the pills, with the statement saying that the confiscated materials could have produced “millions” of tablets.
Captagon is an amphetamine that causes euphoria and numbs the pain, and is reportedly widely used by Syrian rebel fighters.
