WASHINGTON: A Californian district Court has ordered that Facebook must face a class action lawsuit, which accuses it of accessing its users’ private messages for targeted advertising purposes.
According to the lawsuit, the social networking giant has violated both federal and state laws. Lead plaintiff Matthew Campbell and two others have sued Facebook, alleging that the company scanned their users’ private messages for web links. The data, which was lifted from the private messages was then used for targeted advertising.
Last week, U.S. District Court Judge Phyllis Hamilton denied Facebook’s request to dismiss the ECPA and CIPA section 631 claims, while granting dismissal of claims, which pertained to section 632 of the CIPA and section 17200 of the California Business and Professions Code.
