ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance has announced a 10 percent increase in freight charges following a rise in petroleum prices.

Alliance President Malik Shehzad Awan stated that transporters across the country condemned the continuous increase in fuel prices, which is driving inflation and contributing to widespread unemployment due to government policies.

Awan also urged the government to abolish all fines issued by motorway and traffic police.

In a related move, public transport operators announced a 5pc increase in fares, which has taken effect immediately.

Both decisions come as the sector grapples with rising operational costs caused by the surge in petroleum prices.

Earlier, the federal government has issued a notification announcing an increase in petroleum product prices.

According to the notification released by the Petroleum Division, the prices of petrol and diesel have been raised by Rs26.77 per litre.

Following the increase, the new price of petrol has been set at Rs393.35 per litre, while diesel will now cost Rs380.19 per litre.

The Petroleum Division stated that the revised prices of petrol and diesel will come into effect from midnight.
