Punjab announces Wheat Policy 2026 with Rs3,500 per maund

LAHORE: The Punjab government has unveiled its Wheat Policy 2026, setting the new price of wheat at Rs3,500 per maund.

The official notification of the wheat policy has been issued, allowing the government to purchase wheat in collaboration with the private sector. Punjab aims to procure wheat reserves of up to 2.5 million metric tonnes.

According to the notification, strategic wheat reserves will be acquired through selected stakeholders, and the price for wheat this year has been fixed equal to the open market price of 2025.

The policy states that the management of strategic wheat reserves will be handled through purchasing banks. The Punjab government will bear 70% of the financing cost, while selected stakeholders will be provided government warehouses free of charge.

Additionally, the notification specifies that no aggregator can take less than 0.5% or more than 20% of the total wheat. Farmers will receive 100% payment of Rs 3,500 per maund immediately at the time of purchase.
