Punjab likely to tax ads display at highways, hostels, guesthouses

LAHORE: The Punjab government is considering taxing display of advertisements at highways hostels, guesthouses and on internet, and reviewing the proposals for increasing tax on various services.

The issue was discussed during a meeting of Resource Mobilisation Committee which was chaired by Punjab Finance Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman here.

MPAs – Dr Aisha Ghaus Pasha, Sheikh Allauddin, Rana Babar Hussain, Finance Secretary Jehanzeb Khan, secretaries of Transport, Irrigation, C&W and high ranking officers of departments concerned, the Punjab Revenue Authority Chairman, Member Tax Board of Revenue Muzaffar Mehmood and other officers attended the meeting.

Addressing the meeting, the Minister said that difficulties of common man and low-income segments would be taken into account and only taxable sectors would be brought into tax net, adding that the government was also simplifying tax collection system.

He said public welfare and development projects were completed through tax recovery for which the government would have to expand tax net. The meeting was informed that Punjab Health Department had increased daily charges on non-AC private rooms at DHQ and THQ from Rs 200 to Rs 500, whereas increase of daily charges regarding AC rooms at teaching hospitals from Rs245 to Rs1,500 daily. The outdoor ticket-fee has also been revised as Re 1 at RHCs and DHQs, Rs 5 at THQs and DHQs, and Re 1 to Rs 10 at teaching hospitals. The government will generate Rs119.378 million from these two heads.
