Punjab proposes Rs1.45 trillion development budget with focus on transport, local projects

LAHORE: The Punjab government has prepared the second draft of recommendations for the upcoming fiscal year’s budget, with the total development budget likely to be set at Rs1,452 billion.

The transport sector has been given top priority in Punjab’s development budget, with major projects worth Rs303 billion proposed for the sector.

The draft also proposes allocating Rs980 billion for the annual development programme. New smart police stations are expected to be constructed in Okara, Rawalpindi, Kasur, Multan, Gujranwala, and Pakpattan.

Development projects in Lahore, clean water schemes, model villages, and other major initiatives have also been included in the proposed budget. Around Rs30 billion has been suggested for model villages, while Rs42 billion has been proposed for the road restoration programme.

For the next fiscal year, a proposed budget of Rs250 billion has been prepared for the local government sector, including a recommendation to allocate Rs156 billion for local development projects. The draft also proposes granting greater autonomy to local government representatives in the upcoming financial year.

Additionally, Rs560 million has been proposed for the Local Government IT monitoring system, while Rs50 billion is recommended for sewerage works and road rehabilitation in union councils.
