Rawalpindi Customs Intelligence holds six containers on Rs 8m tax evasion

ISLAMABAD: Directorate Customs Intelligence and Investigation Rawalpindi has seized six containers carrying imported vehicle batteries at Islamabad dry port following charges of alleged tax evasion to the tune of Rs 8.25 million through mis-declaration.

The Customs Intelligence has also arrested two officials including principal appraiser, appraiser and owner of M/S Pakistan Royal Group, importer of the said consignment on their involvement in tax evasion.

According to the details, Director Customs Intelligence Rawalpindi, Muhammad Saleem received information that M/s Pakistan Royal Group would attempt to clear its consignment through mis-declaration in connivance with customs officials on which he formed a team to fail the attempt of tax evasion.

Following the instructions, intelligence team reached Islamabad Dry Port and found that importer has paid Rs 8.67 million in wake of duty/taxes instead of paying actual leviable amount Rs 17 million. Therefore authorities confiscated all the six containers and registered First Investigation Report by imposing charges of mis-declaration under the Section 32(1), (2) and 79(1) of Customs Act 1969.

Customs Intelligence has also arrested the accused importer namely Khawaja Moeed and two customs officials.

On the other hand, Special Customs Court has granted the physical remand of accused importer for further interrogation.
