Karachi: R&D Section yet to arrest another suspect in banned antibiotic case

KARACHI: The Research and Development (R&D) Section of Model Customs Collectorate-MCC Appraisement-East has yet to arrest another accused involved in import of banned antibiotics, it is learnt here.

According to details, the R&D team has arrested a suspect allegedly having strong nexus with a cartel. The sources informed Customs Today that the R&D Section, after arresting the suspect, presented him before a magistrate to record his statement according to Section 164 of the Customs Act, 1969.

“The magistrate has refused to hear the case, saying the case does not fall in his jurisdiction”, sources added.

The prime accused, Muhammad Ali Chandna, who was arrested by the R&D Section had already been granted bail against the security deposit of Rs 6 million.

It may also be mentioned here that the MCC-Appraisement (East) and MCC-Appraisement (West) both are investigating the case on the directives of their high-ups.

In addition, the MCC-Appraisement (East) has registered an FIR against M/s Pure Enterprises in the start of this year while the MCC-Appraisement (West) had registered an FIR against the M/s Chemi Zone Enterprises in the previous year into the case of importation of banned antibiotics in country.

It may be worth mentioning that the R&D Section of MCC-Appraisement (East) has already arrested an accused namely Muhammad Ali Chandna during the course of investigation while the AIB Section of MCC-Appraisement (West) after completing its documentation work into the case is planning to reach at its conclusion with some significant moves.

The sources have already informed Customs Today that the R&D Section of MCC-Appraisement (East) will make another breakthrough into the said case in upcoming days.
