Two Brits have revealed their out-of-this-world ambitions – to live and die on Mars.
Ryan MacDonald and Clare Weedon appeared on This Morning where they discussed their reasons behind wanting a one-way ticket to the Red Planet.
Ryan, a 21-year-old physics student from Derby, is the only British man on the shortlist of 100 hopefuls vying for a place on the historic Mars One mission.
He told hosts Philip Schofield and Christine Bleakley that he wasn’t concerned about it being a one-way mission, saying it made sense not to return.
He said: “We’re skipping the putting a flag in a rock stage and coming back.
“There’s lots of misconceptions. We know that Mars used to be habitable, and the big question is ‘can we make it habitable again one day?'”
He continued by saying his family were supportive in his ambitions, but admitted his sister didn’t want to let him go.
He said: “I’ve wanted to go into space ever since i was very young.”I can communicate with family via video messages with about a 40 minute delay.”
Clare, 27, a systems information manager from Surrey, said: “It’s always going to be one way because we want to colonise Mars. That’s the aim of the game.”
Host Philip looked bemused as he asked them about the journey being made into a reality TV series, saying: “I love a bit of reality tele. But I wouldn’t let it send me into space.”
Clare said: “There’s a lot of steps to go yet. Reality TV is to get everyone involved. Everyone will be interested in this and everyone will want to watch.
