Record revenue: Malaysian Customs Dept collects RM33.6 billion

KUANTAN: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (RMCD) has collected record revenue RM33.6 billion or 93.3 per cent of the RM36 billion revenue targeted for this year.

According to its director-general, Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad the amount had increased by 6.73 per cent compared to RM31.48 billion collected during the corresponding period last year.

“The three major contributors are motor vehicles (RM12.2 billion), tobacco (RM3.4 billion) and crude petroleum (RM1.53 billion).

“It is hoped the revenue collection will remain consistent until the end of the year which is only two weeks away from our RM36 billion target,” he told reporters at a press conference held after the 75th Customs Directors Meeting, here the other day.

Also present was State Customs director Datuk Sarip Ismail.

He said, according to a breakdown of activities, excise duty accounted for 23.90 per cent of the total collection followed by service tax 17.76 per cent and sales tax (local) 17.28 per cent.
