MEXICO CITY: A man who attempted to smuggle more than $250,000 to Mexico through a port of entry has been identified in records filed in a Laredo federal court.
Reports state that on Sept. 12, a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Alfredo Calvillo attempted to exit the country using international bridge I.
During an outbound inspection, Calvillo allegedly told U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers that he had $2,000 on him.
Officers referred Calvillo to secondary inspection, during which an X-ray examination on the Equinox showed an anomaly on the front benders of the vehicle.
A search yielded 21 “brick-like” bundles containing $266,000, CBP said.
Calvillo allegedly told authorities that an acquaintance in San Antonio contracted him to smuggle money from San Antonio to Mexico City.
“(He) further stated that the vehicle did not belong to him but had been purchased under his name for the purpose of conducting the smuggling activity,” records state.
Calvillo was charged with smuggling money out of the country.
