ATHENS: Thousands of mostly Syrian refugees have arrived in Greece’s main port of Piraeus aboard a government-chartered ship.
Greece has been trying to ease pressure on the island of Lesbos, which has been overwhelmed by about 20,000 refugees, according to the UN refugee agency.
Yannis Mouzalas, Greece’s interim migration minister, said Lesbos was hosting three to four times more refugees that it could cope with.
The ship set off overnight from Lesbos. Television images showed refugees disembarking calmly on arrival in Piraeus.
