AFRICA: An Asiatic black bear, who was rescued from a farm in southeast Asia, has taken to walking like a human after its ordeal.
The bear was kept in a small cage, hardly fed and was only being kept alive so that its bile could be extracted from it. Bear bile is supposedly used in Chinese holistic medicine as it contains ursodeoxycholic acid.
Bears are capable of walking on their hind legs, but not for extended periods of time. However, this bear was caught on camera taking a little stroll around his new home at the rescue centre.
Eliza Jinata, a wildlife vet who shot the video, explained why she believes the bear ‘walks’ the way he does to the Daily Mail.
“Before his current place was turned into a rescue centre, it functioned as a zoo where visitors could feed him and other bears by throwing food from outside the fence,” said Eliza.
“With his smaller and malnourished body, it is easier for him to stand on his hind leg because his spine can support his light body weight. Standing up and waiting for food slowly became a habit which he does on a daily basis now.”
