FRANCE: Scientists say they have found fossils belonging to a new kind of dinosaur in southern Chile. The dinosaur, which has been dubbed “Chilesaurus”, has unusual features, a bit like a platypus. Scientists say it has changed their understanding of dinosaurs who roamed the southern hemisphere.
A news conference was held in Chile on Tuesday to announce the discovery of Chilesaurus diegosuarezi.
It is a distant cousin of the fearsome T-rex, the largest meat-eater ever to walk the earth. But the Chilesaurus only ate plants with its beak and leaf-shaped teeth.
It lived in a region criss-crossed by rivers at the end of the Jurassic Period, some 145 million years ago. It was relatively small, only reaching up to 3.2 meters long.
“Once we got the bones out of the rock that had covered it for 150 million years,” said Fernando Novas, Paleontologist, Bernardino Rivadavia Natural Sciences Museum.
“We were able to analyze every part of the skeleton. We were surprised to find it was a totally new creature. That’s why we decided to baptize it, to honor Chile and its discoverer Diego. That’s why we call it Chilesaurus diegosuarezi.”
