LONDON: The Sichuan Bush Warbler, a distinctive and rare bird species from the grassy vegetation of central China’s mountainous terrain was identified by researchers due to its distinctive song.
Known by its scientific name as Locustella chengi, after ornithologist Cheng Tso-hsin, researchers confirmed that it was indeed a new species.
The researchers initially thought that it was a Russet Bush Warbler, a bird species of the same look and lives in the same area.
According to Pamela Rasmussen, a biologist from Michigan State University, they found the difference between the Russet Bush Warbler and the distinctive Sichuan Bush Warbler is their secretive behavior and their distinct song.
Rasmussen described its song as, “low-pitched drawn-out buzz, followed by a shorter click, repeated in series.”
