LONDON: Researchers have found a new frog species that looks like Kermit the frog. According to the researchers, it has a bright shade of green with a bulging eyes. The new frog species was found in the rainforests of Costa Rica.
The new frog species called Hyalinobatrachium dianae was found by Brian Kubicki. Kubicki is one of the founder of the Costa Rican Amphibian Research Center. The new frog species was named after Kubicki’s mother, Janet Diane Kubicki.
Kubicki described the frog as unique. It has a different physical characteristic and vocalization he added.
“The advertisement call that the males of this species produce are very unique; no other known species of frog has a similar call and this was indeed one of the traits that we used for the justification of it being a completely new species,” Kubicki explained.
It is part of the glass frog family. Glass frogs have semi-transparent stomach and you can see their organs from within. The Hyalinobatrachium dianae is now the 14th tropical amphibian species in the area.
Most of the glass frog species were discovered by Kubicki and his team in the Talamanca Mountains while exploring the Costa Rican tropical rainforests.
“Hopefully this will help increase the awareness of the incredible amphibians found in Costa Rica and the need to continue studying them and conserve their vital habitats. Costa Rica stands alone with its density of amphibian species; within a mere 51,000 square kilometers of national territory, 201 species of amphibians have been documented,” Kubicki added.
