WASHINGTON: According to researchers, our ancestors such as Neanderthals had no permanent chin unlike the modern man. Early theories posit that as we evolved, we developed our chin and our chin is being used to make chewing easier.
Nathan Holton, an anthropologist at the University of Iowa said that this is not true though.
According to Holton, “The development of the chin doesn’t seem to have anything to do with resistance to bending stresses.” But they are related. Holton explained that the chin was just part of our evolving, getting smaller face.
“It really seems like a lot of changes in the modern human face are really due to a reduction in size, so if we can explain that, we can explain a lot”.
For the study, the researchers analyzed the effect of chin to our jaw by examining x-ray images of children’s skull development from age 3 into adulthood. It involved tracking the measurements of jaw development of 18 females and 19 males.
