Retail trade sales slightly up in June

HELSINKI: Sales in total trade went up by 0.2 per cent year-on-year in June 2016, according to Statistics Finland’s data. In motor vehicle trade, the growth in sales continued strong, as sales grew in total by 11.4 per cent from one year ago. Sales of retail trade in turn went up by 0.8 per cent in June. Among retail trade industries, sales grew in both daily consumer goods trade and in department store trade by 1.8 per cent. Of trade industries, only wholesale trade sales declined, down by 2.6 per cent in June from one year ago. The sales volume in motor vehicle trade grew by 10.8 per cent from June 2015.

The growth was affected by increased sales of new motor vehicles as the data indicate that the number of first registrations of motor vehicles was also 13.4 per cent higher in June than in June 2015. The sales volume in retail trade increased by 1.6 per cent while in wholesale trade, the volume went down by 0.7 per cent from one year back. And thus, the sales increased in total trade by 1.5 per cent in June.

Sales in total trade increased by 0.7 per cent in January to June from January to June 2015. In the corresponding period, motor vehicle sales went up by 10.6 per cent and retail trade sales by 0.7 per cent from one year previously. The sales in wholesale trade in turn decreased by 1.6 per cent in January to June from January to June 2015.
