MULTAN: The revenue challenges faced by Collectorate of Customs Enforcement Multan during January 2023-24 underscored systemic issues within the revenue collection framework. Despite the implementation of various measures such as auctions, anti-smuggling initiatives, and the Currency Declaration System at Multan International Airport, revenue collections fell significantly short of the assigned target.
Multan Customs has collected almost Rs42.99 million in wake of customs duty against the assigned collection revenue task of Rs600 million for the month of December2023-24. While Multan Customs Collectorate collected Rs45 million in wake of Customs duty during the corresponding period.
Multan Customs Collectorate Enforcement has attained only 14% allocated revenue tasks during month of January due to enrichment of revenue task by the Member Customs. The Customs Collectorate has collected almost Rs.1.385 million under the head of Sales taxes during month of January in the ongoing fiscal year 2023-24. While Multan Customs collected almost Rs.3.85 million during corresponding period. Multan Customs has collected almost Rs.1.68 million Income taxes during January in the financial year 2023-24.
The disconnect between the unrealistic revenue task set by the Member Customs and the practical realities on the ground hampered the effectiveness of enforcement efforts. While slight improvements were observed in Customs duty, sales taxes, and income taxes compared to the previous period, they remained insufficient to meet targets.
The establishment of a Trade Facilitation desk was a step in the right direction, signaling an intent to streamline operations and enhance revenue collection. However, it is imperative for Multan Customs Collectorate Enforcement to undertake a comprehensive review of its strategies and align them with achievable revenue goals.
Sources informed Customs today that addressing the underlying discrepancies between assigned tasks and practical expectations is crucial for improving revenue performance and ensuring the effective facilitation of trade. Multan Customs must prioritize implementing targeted measures to expedite customs processes and strengthen compliance mechanisms to tackle smuggling effectively.
