KARACHI: The affairs of detecting fraud cases in terms of tax evasion in the Model Customs Collectorate (MCC) Appraisement-East has been complex with every passing day, as the rift between the officials is widening, it is learnt.

Sources informed Customs Today that the high-ups of the collectorate were discouraging the officials to make contravention reports in connection with tax evasion, under-invoicing and misdeclaration.

They alleged that some officers were giving undue favour to importers in import of their consignments. The sources claimed that some of the officials were involved in un-necessary delay in executing the cases made by the officials of the collectorate, which resulting in demoralising the working spirit of the officials of the collectorate.

“The legal lacunas in most of the cases by the officers of the collectorate are giving easy access and an opportunity to the unscrupulous elements to move to the different courts against Pakistan Customs’ decisions and then easily acquit from the cases of tax evasion,” sources revealed.

A Grade-18 official said that the collectorate while following the directives of Collector Najeebur Rehman Abbasi was taking up each and every case on legal grounds while keeping the parameters of Customs Act 1969 in the mind.

“The collectorate is striving the hard to facilitate the trade without creating un-necessary impediments,” the officer asserted.
