Rs400m for health, Rs280m for edu: 15 new uplift schemes worth Rs2.5b approved for FATA

PESHAWAR: The FATA Working Development Party (FWDP) has approved various uplift schemes of over Rs2.5 billion for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

FATA Additional Chief Secretary Mohammad Azam Khan chaired the meeting which was held at the FATA Secretariat on Sunday. A number of senior officials of education, health, communication, energy, livestock and fisheries departments were in attendance along with officials of the FATA Disaster Management Authority (FDMA).

According to a handout issued here Sunday, 15 new and the ongoing schemes under the Annual Development Programme got approval of the FWDP. While twelve schemes were deferred and sent back to the concerned departments for review.

The FWDP also approved constitution of a special body called ‘Fata Analysis and Strategy Team’ to further streamline security system in the tribal belt to ensure smooth execution of the development projects. A sum of Rs15 million has initially been approved for the project estimated to cost a total of Rs90 million.

The FWDP approved Rs750 million for the renovation of the Peshawar-Torkham Highway and Rs200 million for devising an effective monitoring system to ensure presence of teachers in educational institutions. It also set aside Rs80 million for provision of basic amenities in 30 schools of Kurram Agency.

Likewise, it accorded approval to a hefty amount of Rs100 million for restoration of damaged roads in South Waziristan Agency, including Gomal Zam-Wana-Angoor Adda Road, Jandola-Makeen Road, and Rashakai-Wana-Makeen Road.

The FWDP approved Rs60 million for bringing reforms in the health sector and Rs130 million for health management system. It allocated Rs400 million for reconstruction and restoration of damaged health facilities in Fata. The development party also approved Rs180 million for Fata Disaster Management Authority, and Rs100 million for setting up a terminal operation unit at the Torkham border.
