Rs517m, Rs2.94m scandals: NAB to file references against ex-WWB secretary, BISE chief

ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has decided to file two references against Workers Welfare Board former secretary Tariq Awan and Dera Ismail Khan Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) former chairman Prof Dr Abdul Rahim Khan,

The executive board meeting of NAB has approved the first reference against Tariq Awan, ex-WWB project manager Abdul Waheed, contractors Muhammad Asghar Awan, Arslan Qureshi, Manzoor Ahmad Ghauri, and Naeem Rabbani, for illegally awarding of 9 contracts for unlawful procurement of equipment including generators, vacuum cleaners, first aid boxes, fans, fibre glass rooms, interactive boards, stationary, carpets, uniforms, sports items etc through fake and non-registered firms at highly exorbitant rates of worth Rs517,466,475 approximately.

The meeting also decided second reference against Prof Dr Abdur Rahim Khan, ex-controller Muhammad Atlas Khan, ex-acting controller Amanullah Khan and ex-assistant controller Wajeehuddin Ahmad for violating rules and regulations in connivance with one another and received applications from students after the due date with normal fees and in some cases even without any fee.

The illegal re-totalling, thus re-checking and re-marking were conducted and marks of 2394 students in 4140 answer sheets of SSC and HSSC were changed/increased, which caused a loss of Rs2,945,000 to national exchequer.

The NAB meeting also decided to close one inquiry against Najaff Abbas Siyal, ex-land acquisition collector, Lahore Development Authority (LDA), and others. The executive board also decided to close a complaint verification against Allah Wasaya Awan, ex-DG Information Technology, Training & Research, regarding accumulation of assets beyond known legal sources of income due to lack of incriminating evidence.
