Rs55b burden on consumers: ECC okays raise in power tariff, 1.2m tonnes wheat export at Rs6b public expense

ISLAMABAD: The Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet (ECC), under the chairmanship Federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, has allowed the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) to raise the power tariff.

The ECC approved the issuance of policy directive to Nepra to build in costs incurred by the power sector into the tariff without affecting the end consumer. The ECC directed the Nepra to build over Rs55 billion additional cost of system and managerial inefficiencies into the consumer tariff.

The Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet okayed export of 1.2 million tons wheat at Rs6 billion public expense out of surplus stocks available in Punjab and Sindh and immediately ban import of wheat’s by-products. Punjab will export 800,000 tons, while Sindh to 400,000 tons wheat and get $55 and $45 per metric ton subsidy respectively. Punjab and Sindh provinces have surplus stock of wheat.

Meanwhile, the ECC also approved extension of GSA between the Oil and Gas Development Corporation Limited (OGDCL) and Fauji Kabirwala Power Company Limited (FKPCL) for the provision of 20mmcfd of gas till the LNG supply to the company for power generation of 157MW.
