BRENT: While the Russian cargo spacecraft Progress M-27M was slated to bring more than $50 million in supplies to the International Space Station, a systems failure aboard the craft has doomed it to a fiery death in Earth’s atmosphere.
Sometime between May 5th and May 7th, Progress will slip back into the Earth’s gravity well and plunge to its demise, according to a joint announcement from NASA and Roscosmos, the US space agency’s Russian counterpart. System failures in the cargo carrier’s engine had sent it into an uncontrollable spin, and engineers on the ground have been unsuccessful to regain control of the spacecraft.
Roscosmos officials say that it’s almost a certainty that an incident occurred during the resupply capsule’s launch, specifically during the third stage separation from the Soyuz rocket that lifted Progress into orbit. A 1.5 second interruption in telemetry flow occurred prior to the spacecraft separation; rocket telemetry was lost completely, while data coming from Progress was intermittent according to Aleksandr Ivanov, Roscosmos’ First Deputy.
