MOSCOW: The scientists are nervous to study dozens of new Siberian Craters in the “ends of the Earth” almost 100 feet in diameter. Russian scientists have discovered seven craters in total, five of which are in the Yamal Peninsula.
At the time, one scientist suggested that global warming had thawed the permafrost, which then caused a blast as the methane trapped inside the icy ground exploded.
“Gas pressure increased until it was high enough to push away the overlaying layers in a powerful injection, forming the crater,” one German scientist said.
However, researchers now fear there are more craters than anyone knew – which could have huge repercussions.
