ATHENS: The woman had arrived at Athens International Airport in Greece from Moscow when they went through routine checks on Friday at about 11.45am.

They put her suitcase through scanners and began going through her belongings to check for prohibited items such as huge quantities of alcohol or cigarettes.

But officials were shocked when they instead found the huge amount of cash hidden away in secret compartments of her suitcase, and tucked inside a latex bodysuit worn under her clothes.

The woman, who arrived on an Aeroflot flight, had stashed away a whopping €2.2135million along with a further $58,900 in cash – none of which had been declared in Moscow or to Greek customs officials.

Border control staff were able to make use of some of the money, however, and fined the woman 25 per cent of the amount discovered – equivalent to £496,305 (€553,375) worth of her loot. But the rest could still be confiscated if further investigation reveals the money was not obtained legally.

If investigators decide the woman, who has been arrested, is involved in serious levels of money laundering, then the whole amount will be taken away.
