CAPE TOWN: South Africa was the main source within the Union with a contribution of 64.2%, which is equivalent to P4 billion followed by Namibia with 13.3%, which was P817.4 million contributions to total imports during October 2016. According to the report, the major commodities imported from South Africa were non-industrial diamonds unworked or simply sawn cleaved or bruited, petrol and distillate fuel with contributions of 15% or P590.7 million, 6.8% or P270.1 million and 5.7% or P224 million respectively of total imports from that country.
“The other major source of imports during October 2016 was Asia, having supplied imports valued at P508.6 million representing 8.3% of total imports during the month. India, China and Korea were the most contributors to imports sourced from Asia, with P133.6 million, 1.5% which is P89.5 million and 1.4% which is P88.8 million respectively of total imports during the month under review,” read the report.
The European Union supplied imports valued at P351.9 million, accounting for 5.7% of total imports during the month under review. The main suppliers of imports from this region were Belgium and Germany each with 1.7% of total imports during the month, at values of P106.5 million and P102.6 million respectively. The main commodities imported from Belgium were, “Non-industrial diamonds unworked or simply sawn, cleaved or bruited ”, at 84.4% which is P89.9 million and “Non-industrial diamonds, not mounted or set, NES”, at 13.4% which is P14.2 million of total goods sourced from the country, while from Germany imports comprised mostly “Electrical Machinery and Parts thereof; Sound Recorders and Reproducers, Television image and Sound recorders and reproducers and parts and accessories of such articles”. Imports from Canada were valued at P340.3 million, representing 5.5% of total imports during October 2016, comprising mainly, of “Unsorted Diamonds”, with a contribution of 95.6% which is P325.5 million of total imports from the country.
Total imports for September 2016 increased by 1.6% P82.2 million from P5.2 million as at September 2016 digest to P8.5 million as at October 2016 digest. The increases are as a result of inclusion of new data from manual borders as well as data from transactions that had deferred customs duty assessments. Discussions on imports are based on cost, insurance and freight value.
