SEOUL: Samsung Electronics is still the king of the global smartphone market in Q2 this year, according to new research. According to Phone Arena on Sept. 25, the U.S. leading online media outlet covering the world of information technology, market research institute Counterpoint found that Samsung Electronics ranked first, with 21 percent of the global smartphone shipment from April to June. The Korean company was followed by Apple Inc. with 14 percent, Huawei with 9 percent, both Xiaomi and ZTE with 5 percent, LG with 4 percent, and TCL-Alcatel with 3 percent.
Except for the North American market, which is a stronghold of Apple, Samsung Electronics ranks top in the markets of Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa, establishing its position as the leader of the global smartphone market. In the North American market, Apple came in first with 31 percent, followed by Samsung Electronics with 24 percent, and LG Electronics with 15 percent.
Samsung Electronics also took first place in all smartphone shipments, including feature phones, with 19 percent. Apple took the second spot with 10 percent, followed by Huawei with 7 percent, Nokia (or Microsoft) with 6 percent, and all ZTE, Xiaomi, TCL-Alcatel, and LG Electronics with 4 percent.
Meanwhile, smartphones accounted for 75 percent in the total cell phone shipments during Q2. Among them, 4G LTE smartphone models accounted for 50 percent. In the U.S. and China, particularly, LTE smartphones accounted for 67 percent.
