Samsung Galaxy S5 vs BlackBerry Passport evaluation, tough contest to lead market

LONDON: Although the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the BlackBerry Passport are the flagship smartphones of their respective companies, they are miles apart in terms of features and design.

The BlackBerry Passport has a striking square design with a physical keyboard that makes it wider than any other smartphones. It also has a premium metal frame and a back panel made from polycarbonate. As for the Galaxy S5 it has a plastic frame and dimpled back panel.

Display

When it comes to screen size, the BlackBerry Passport has a much smaller IPS LCD screen measuring 4.5 inches with a resolution of 1440 x 1440 pixels and a density of 453 pixels per inch. Compared to this, the Galaxy S5 has a bigger 5.1-inch Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and a density of 432 pixels per inch.

Platform

Android 4.4.2 KitKat comes loaded on the Galaxy S5 while the BlackBerry Passport runs the BlackBerry 10.3 OS, which also allows users to run Android apps. In terms of their specs, the BlackBerry Passport has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801chipset, quad-core 2.26 GHz Krait 400 CPU and Adreno 330 GPU while the Galaxy S5 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, coupled with a quad-core 2.5 GHz Krait 400 CPU and Adreno 330 GPU.

Memory

When it comes to memory card slots, both devices have them, allowing for additional external storage of up to 128 GB. In terms of RAM, the BlackBerry has 3 GB while the Galaxy S5 has 2 GB.

Camera

The Galaxy S5 has a 16 megapixel camera at its rear while the BlackBerry Passport has a 13 megapixel version with optical image stabilization.

Battery

Comparing their batteries, the BlackBerry Passport has a non-removable 3450 mAh battery while the Galaxy S5 has a 2800 mAh battery.

Price

The Galaxy S5 costs $199 with a two-year contract while the BlackBerry Passport can be bought in its unlocked state for $599. It is expected to be launched shortly with an on-contract price tag of $249.
