TOKYO: Reports about Samsung working on a successor to the premium S5, allegedly called S6, from scratch have been doing the rounds for sometime. Now, first details of its new entry-level smartphone dubbed J1 have surfaced.

According to Sammobile, the Samsung SM-J100 sports a 4.3-inch 480×800-pixel display. It is expected to be powered by a 64-bit 1.2GHz quad-core processor from Marvell coupled with 1GB RAM.

On the storage front, it gets 4GB onboard storage and support for microSD card slot. It is also said to come with a 5MP rear snapper and a 2MP front-facing camera. A 1,850mAh battery completes the package.

The smartphone may also get some features seen in the high-end Galaxy range of devices like Ultra Power Saving Mode and some other custom software. The J1 will be made available in single-SIM and dual-SIM variants. It will support both 3G and 4G LTE connectivity.

The report is also accompanied by a leaked image that gives us a glimpse of the upcoming smartphone.

The device may be launched this week on January 14 as the leaked image shows the date, but for now, let’s take this with a pinch of salt. “The Galaxy J1 could be announced as soon as this week – the January 14 date in the images suggest it could be unveiled this Wednesday, though we will have to wait and see if Samsung really does come out with yet another smartphone so soon after announcing the Galaxy A7, E5 and E7,” according to the report by Sammobile.

With the Mobile World Congress next month, and Samsung already rumoured to introduce its new smartphones and watch there, it is highly speculated that the J1 may pop its head at the conference too.
