Samsung’s share in India’s mobile market increases to 39% from 34% at beginning of 2015

SEOUL: Samsung’s overall market share in India’s mobile handset market has gone up to 39 percent from 34 percent at the beginning of 2015, a top company official said on Thursday.

The South Korean tech giant had a market share of over 40 percent in smart phones segments according to the figures available till July. This stood at 35 percent at the start of the year.

Talking to reporters after launching Galaxy A8, the newest members of Galaxy A family, Samsung India’s vice president, marketing, IT and mobile, Asim Warsi said they have strengthened their market leadership in all the segments, thanks to the series of launches this year.

This is the 16th model launched by Samsung this year. The models unveiled so far include flagship S6, S6 Edge, A, E and J Series.

“From flagship devices to premium smart phones to feature phones and tablets, we cater to all categories,” he said.

Warsi said the market this year has been buoyant with high growth pattern and Samsung is fuelling the growth in smart phone segment with new launches. “We will continue this pace of launches in coming months,” he said while declining to put a number.

He claimed that all the new launches were well received by the market. These include Samsung Z, the first model based on Tizen operating system, which the company sold a million of these devices in 150 days. He described Tizen as an operating system with good future, offering many possibilities.

Samsung sells 30 handset devices including smart phones and feature phones and tablets in India. All the devices including the most complex S6 Edge were produced its facility at Greater Noida.

“We have very large capacity, which can cater to 100 percent capacity in near and medium term,” Warsi said when asked if they have plans for setting up more manufacturing units.

He quoted industry figures to say that south India contributes about 27 to 28 percent of the overall mobile market.

Samsung Galaxy A8 is the slimmest Galaxy phone at 5.9 mm with 5.7 inch full HD Super AMOLED and adaptive display technology to deliver better viewing experience.

Priced at Rs.32, 500, the smart phone comes in full metal uni-body build. The Android based 4G enabled phone has Octa core processor with 32 GB memory, 2GB RAM, dual SIM and 3,050mAh battery.
