ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will achieve the sustainable development goals recently announced by the United Nations for the welfare and prosperity of the people.

Advisor to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz Monday said this while addressing 8th South Asia Economic Summit. He said although Pakistan could not achieve many of the Millennium Development Goals in the past but now it was well poised to achieve the economic targets due to prudent economic polices adopted by the present government.

The Advisor said there was a need of rural development for sustainable development and the government had been giving due importance to this sector.

Pakistan, he said, had taken several steps in the last couple of years to resolve the issue of poverty. Sartaj Aziz said the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) was one of the important projects being providing financial assistance to millions of people in over 118 districts throughout the country.

The Advisor said the present government had enhanced the budget for BISP and assured that there would be further expansion in this programme in the years to come. He said organised efforts were under way for disaster management and to meet the challenges posed by the climate change.
