RIYADH: Saudi customs has foiled an attempt to smuggle drugs worth $3 million into Saudi Arabia from Lebanon.

The Internal Security Forces said in a statement that a joint operation between Lebanese and Saudi authorities succeeded in busting four people involved in the smuggling.

A 28-year-old Lebanese man, identified by his initials I.M., was arrested in Lebanon for sending the drugs by post to Saudi Arabia.

Three others were arrested by Saudi police when they arrived to receive the drugs at the post office.

The confiscated package contained 150,000 Captagon pills hidden inside wooden boards, the ISF statement added.

The price of each pill is estimated around $20, making the package worth some $3 million, police said.

Drug trafficking is punishable by death in Saudi Arabia, most often in the form of beheading. So far this year, 38 people have been beheaded in Saudi Arabia, many of them over drug charges.

A separate ISF statement said that police arrested two Lebanese in Beirut for promoting drugs and another two citizens for using the substance.
