SC suspends tax deduction on pre-paid mobile phone cards

LAHORE: Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar has suspended the taxes on mobile cards. Supreme Court also suspended the notice issued by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

Chief Justice of Pakistan gave two days deadline for the removal of all taxes by the government on the mobile cards.

On Monday, three members bench of Supreme Court of Pakistan headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar and two other judges heard suo moto case.

After the hearing of case, Justice Ijazul Ahsan remarked that peoples are being looted through levy of taxes on mobile cards, how the government is collecting taxes from a labor.

Court also remarked that government can collect taxes from those who use mobile extensively. If a person cannot fall in tax net then how government can collect taxes from him.

Adding more the consumer gets RS64.38 on recharge of rupees 100 that is not fair Government should make a strategy to deduct taxes on use of mobile phone.

Chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), also appeared before the court and argued that deduction of services charges on mobile calls is according to act of companies. He said that more than 130 million people are using mobile phone in Pakistan and only five percent paying taxes.
