NUEO LAREDO: The Kansas City-based company announced that it had opened a new operation in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, called Scarbrough de México de R.L. de C.V. A release said the company will operate as a full-services logistics firm in Mexico providing freight forwarding, Mexican customs brokerage, international consulting services and domestic truck and rail services.

The creation of the new operation comes on the heels of Scarbrough’s announcement of its plans to acquire Laredo Becnel Inc. of Laredo, Texas, and Despachos Hugo S.C. of Nuevo Laredo.

Scarbrough International spokesman Kevin Ekstrand said the new company was established because the freight brokerages it acquired did not have freight-forwarding capabilities.

Jeannie Scarbrough, managing director and co-owner of Scarbrough International, said the completion of the acquisition and the establishment of the new operations have positioned the company well to capitalize on growing cross-border freight traffic.

“Laredo now becomes the gateway between our U.S. and Mexico operations; it strengthens our NAFTA capabilities not only for our clients but for clients seeking one point of contact for all their North American business,” Scarbrough said in a release.

Ekstrand said Mexico is becoming a more important trading partner with the United States and the company’s customers at large. He said clients want to capitalize on the lower cost of production in Mexico and the nation’s growing consumer market, so establishing a cross-border business was a great opportunity for the company going forward.
