NUMIBE: A Minnesota scientist in Costa Rica has discovered a new species of glass frog.Oddly enough; the frog looks very similar to the Muppets character Kermit the Frog.
Brian Kubicki said the small, semi-translucent specimen is delicate and “is a good indicator of the general health of the eco-system.” Kubicki named the frog “Hyalinobatrachium dianae” in honor of the senior author’s mom Janet Diane Kubicki, the Costa Rican Amphibian Research Center says.
Other authors include Stanley Salazar and Robert Puschendorf, according to the Center.
Glass frogs are found in parts of South and Central America. Their skin is so translucent that you can see their organs.
Kubicki said that the new species is clearly different due to its coloring and the distinctive sound of its call.
Including this new discovery, Costa Rica has 14 types of glass frogs.
