PARIS: According to reports, scientists at the Global Initiative for Honeybee Health have developed a technical way in order to determine the reason behind declining population of honey bees. They have come up with a system that includes microscopic sensors.
Microscopic sensors are attached to the bee so as to keep track of their journey and find information in relation to the matter. Numbers of the pollinators are declining to a greater extent over time and this declining trend has been dubbed as “colony collapse disorder”. As per experts, pollinator is a biotic agent that transfers pollen from the male anthers to the female stigma of flowers in order to accomplish fertilization in them.
As per the Natural Defense Resource Council, roughly one-third of honeybee colonies in the United States have disappeared.
As per experts, the micro-sensors are attached to the honey bees and hives especially, in order to know the duration and frequency of foraging and find out whether bees are feeding or gathering pollen in addition to their activities in the hives. The backpacks weigh less than the insects and they are attached on backside of the insects. The microscopic sensor does not affect the well-being and stability of the insect.
According to Dr. Paulo de Souza, lead author of the study, “The tiny technology allows researchers to analyze the effects of stress factors including disease, pesticides, air pollution, water contamination, diet and extreme weather on the movements of bees and their ability to pollinate”.
One can listen to Dr Stephen Quarrell in an audio, in which he is telling about benefits from technology.
