EUROPE: Saltier than our oceans, but on Earth, where there is water, there is life.
In a press conference a Monday, NASA announced that scientists have discovered liquid water on Mars, bringing scientist one step closer to finding life on the red planet.
Because of this, NASA, and other scientists continue to speculate that they will find a few manner of life on Mars because they now know that there is water there, reports NBC News.
“So yes, under certain circumstances, liquid water has been found on Mars”.
However, it is believed that the water found on Mars is only likely to be a shallow subsurface flow. Previous studies suggest that frozen water is found at its poles and that salty water might be present underneath its surface, but this is the first time that evidence has been collected of it flowing on the surface.
NASA researchers say further exploration is warranted to determine whether any microscopic life might exist on modern-day Mars. He said neither Curiosity, which is now roving the Martian surface, nor a future rover set to launch in 2020, will be able to explore these regions where water is thought to flow. And Google didn’t miss the opportunity to celebrate the landmark discovery via an innovative Doodle, which depicts the round Red Planet sipping a glass of water.
Known as recurring slop lineae (RSL), the streaks seem to ebb and flow, apparently in accord with seasonal fluctuations.
“We are now at a point technologically, with over 50 years of successful space flight, that we have the ability to go there, ask the question, is there life on Mars, and go there and answer it”, Grunsfeld said.
Each spring, when temperatures begin to increase, dark streaks appear on the martian surface.
