NEW YORK: A recent detection system offers hopes of tempering the havoc caused by disruptive solar storms as it claims of detecting the turbulent upheaval 24 hours in advance, marking a significant improvement over existing detection systems, which only provide 30 to 60 minutes of warning.
The new detection system would certainly help to reduce the damage caused to vulnerable electronics and equipment. Everything, from the Global Positioning Systems satellites and radio communications to power grids would get the much needed respite from these troublesome storms.
An article published in the scientific journal Space Weather describes that the new detection system developed by NASA scientists, including one of Indian-origin, will utilize satellite-based cameras in multiple locations to ascertain an approaching solar storm and also determine the orientation of its magnetic fields to estimate the destructive capacity of the upcoming squall.
Neel Savani, space physicist affiliated with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and the lead researcher informed that the proposed system has already been tested on eight different solar storms and the predictions correlated well with the forecasts.
