Senate body asks FBR to monitor GLT plants for curbing tobacco smuggling

ISLAMABAD: Senate sub-standing committee on National Health Services Wednesday asked the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to ensure monitoring of green leaf threshing (GLT) plants.

The committee, met under the chairmanship of Senator Nauman Wazir, said that implementing relevant laws are more challenging job to control increasing use of tobacco.

Green Leaf Threshing (GLT) is an important stage in the post harvest processing of tobacco because at this stage, the tobacco is packed for the final consumption from its raw form.

The committee convener asked to have proper monitoring of tobacco at GLT stage before reaching tobacco companies. The committee was informed that 85% children of under six years of age easily affect from the advertisement on tobacco. It was informed that the anti-tobacco cell was working in the ministry with the financial support of international organizations and efforts were being made to make PC-1 of the project.

The FBR officials informed the body that two inspector and two policemen were working to control cigarette smuggling. They sought further time to impose electronic tax on cigarette. Tobacco Board officials informed that tobacco companies were not sharing figures of tobacco sale and purchase.
