SHC adjourns bail plea of alleged poppy seed smuggler

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has adjourned till December 28 the bail petition of a suspect allegedly involved in smuggling of 34 tons of poppy seeds to Malaysia.

The court put off the bail petition filed by Asif Malik, who moved the court, seeking his release after the Customs Court rejected his bail.

According to the prosecution, the Directorate General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation had seized around 34 tons of poppy seed from two containers on August 11, 2015.

The consignment of poppy seeds was being smuggled to Malaysia in the garb of sea salt from Karachi Port. Subsequently, an FIR was registered against exporter Asif Malik of Shah Plastic Industries, his business associate Syed Hassan Ali Gillani, clearing agent DJ Connections’ proprietor Tanseel Ahmed Dar, and his employees Muhammad Hafeez and Sarfaraz Mirani.
