SHC directs Customs to unblock NTN of Comnet Enterprises

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court directed Pakistan Customs to unblock the national tax number and user ID of Comnet Enterprises owned by Moazzam Ali Khan, who has been detained by the law enforcers for his alleged involvement in the murder of MQM leader.  While allowing the petition, a division bench of SHC directed the customs authorities to release the detained consignments of Comnet Enterprises.

The judges observed that the NTN has been blocked without issuing show-cause notice to the company or initiating license suspension proceedings against it. The mere fact that the petitioner’s spouse has been detained for his involvement in the crime does not ipso facto entitle the respondent authorities to block the NTN or use ID.

The wife of Khan had petitioned the high court seeking court directions for the customs authorities to unblock national tax number (NTN) and user ID of Comnet Enterprise.

Sadia Bano, wife of Khan, submitted that the NTN and user ID of the Comnet Enterprises was blocked due to which several shipments, which are lying at the Air Fright Unit (AFU) of the Jinnah International Airport, are not being released. She said that the company had paid all customs duties and taxes but despite that the consignments have been detained, causing huge loss to the company.

She prayed to the court to order the relevant authorities to unblock the NTN and User ID of the company. The court was further requested to direct the customs authorities to release the consignment.
